JLMUN Chronicle

Blog of the Press Corps at JLMUN 2019 – IMUNA International Conference

The Press Corps

Words are powerful and by extension of that so is the work of the press – especially in the arena of international politics. The press often is an immediate witness when decisions of global importance are made by those who rule.  What the press writes, posts or does not publish often dictates the course the international community takes. It is the link between the world of politics and the common public. What the press observes, discovers and influences is what makes headlines and what will be known to the people and talked about.

Mindful of that responsibility, we, the Press Corps of JLMUN 2019, will follow the work of the committees and the secretariat: We will break the news of what is being discussed behind closed doors as issues of immense importance for all of humanity are being addressed and invite you to catch a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes at an MUN conference. The Press Corps Delegates represent different news agencies and have each been given the task to provide coverage on one of the other committees. They will provide insights and analyses on the debates as well as the resolution writing but also on ceremonies and socials.

For our readers’ convenience, we promise to be everyone’s eyes and ears – to be at the heart of the conference. It is our goal to keep every single participant informed, honest and entertained. By that we aim to contribute to an environment in which all of us can widen our horizons, engage in inter-cultural dialogue and can learn from and with one another so that ultimately we will embrace our diversity!

On a broader scale, we hope to represent JLMUN 2019 to the outside world, to spread the word about MUN and about how students as well as young professionals are deeply invested in finding solutions for pressing questions through negotiation and debate.

However, we can only fulfill these goals in a joint effort: Which is why we ask you, dear reader, to reach out to us and collaborate with us. We invite you to approach us in the committee room, during coffee breaks, to join in on the fun via our various social media channels and our gossip box. Make sure to follow the Press Corps / JLMUN Chronicle on Facebook and Instagram.

Below you can find out more about us – the Press Corps Chairs and Delegates. Together we bring you this blog – JLMUN Chronicle.

Cheers to JLMUN 2019!

The Chairs

Rahel Schwarz: Chair

  • A few words about me: My interest in international politics, governance and diplomacy has not only lead me to pursue a law degree at the University of Hamburg with a major in EU & Public International Law but also to get involved in MUN. Since participating in my first simulation as a press team member, I have delegated in several international conferences at an advanced level. As of recently, I have the honor to serve as Deputy Chairwoman of HanseMUN e.V. as well as USG of External Relations at HamMUN 2019. It has been a true learning experience, and I would like to dedicate the skills MUN continues to equip me with to making a difference at the intersection of politics, law and conflicts in the future. Additionally, I have volunteered as an administrator / editor for the online-youth-literature magazine www.die-blaue-seite.de from 2012 to 2016. In fact, getting to interview David Safier deepened my curiosity for Jewish history and his novel for “For 28 Days” was constantly on my mind during my first visit to Israel. Fortunately, my academic and personal path keeps leading me back to Israel – a place close to my heart – and I am genuinely excited for chairing this committee and getting to work with a wonderful team.
  • My Journalistic Objective for JLMUN 2019: Driven by my belief in the power of journalism to engage people in politics and to shed light on issues that should concern as all, I strive for the Press Corps to contribute to the important debates and show new perspectives. Once participants start referring to JLMUN Chronicle for information, our mission is completed. I am determined to create an environment in which delegates can excel at their journalistic craft while we work together as one.
  • What Diversity means to me: A kaleidoscope comes to my mind – no visual illusion is the same due to the abundance of colors and shapes but all are uniquely beautiful. This analogy stands for the variety of cultures, languages, beliefs, opinions etc. that surround us. Acknowledging that we can benefit tremendously from our particularities when we are willing to learn, and that different capabilities are a necessity for a functioning society takes courage and curiosity. But when we do, there is potential in diversity. Hopefully, JLMUN 2019 – by bringing people together from all walks of life – can raise awareness for the importance of diversity – now that so many are trying to make us believe that it must be undermined.

Ori Livneh: Vice-Chair

  • A few words about me: I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and international relations from the Open University in Israel, I started my M.A studies also at the same university. This is my second year in MUN, I participated in approximately 10-11 national and international conferences. I am the Head of Logistics of the OpenMUN society, I am a professional photographer.  I graduated from the Photography department of my high school. Moreover,  I am the official photographer of the Open University Students Union as well as  of the OpenMUN society. In recent years,  I’ve been using photography more as a hobby – I now work in hospitality. I like to catch movement with my camera for fun, especially wild animals, soccer players, etc’. By absolute chance, I got to photograph models several times and I still can’t believe I actually did it.
  • My Journalistic Objective for JLMUN 2019: To get to the truth and reveal it worldwide, even if it is not pink and nice, but to do it with respect to all sides, show all the sides that are involved without personal agendas.
  • What Diversity means to me: It means that we are the same as being people but we are also different due to our thoughts and mind, therefore even if don’t think alike we still need to hear the other person out and maybe learn something new about him/her or even about ourselves. Diversity can be a different point of view, can be different look, can be a different culture but that is the beauty of it.

The Delegates

Asaf Cohen – Die Welt – GA-6

  • A few words about me: It’s my first year in IDC, I study law and government. Before that, I was an intelligence officer in the IDF.  I’m taking a part in IDC MUN Society but I don’t have much experience, I took part only in 1 conference- BGUMUN for beginners -, so I guess my level is not so high. (I’m coming to JLMUN to learn! And have a great experience obviously)
  • My Journalistic Objective for JLMUN 2019:
  • What Diversity means to me: Diversity for me is the belief that I am able to learn from people from all different walks of life. We all can do it, open our mind to different perspectives, different cultures, and see the beauty in building new bridges for connections. If we do it, we definitely make the world a better place.
  • I will post as

Sarah Jenkins – CNN – Security Council

  • A few words about me: I am currently in my final year at City, University of London in the Erasmus Mundus Journalism Master’s program, specializing in Business & Finance Journalism, with an undergrad degree in Broadcast Journalism – Electronic Media. I have worked in just about every field, but news is home. Outside work and school…I don’t like children, I do like dogs and drinks. I have a deep love for silent letters and I long for time travel.
  • My Journalistic Objective for JLMUN 2019: Achieve my dream of working for CNN (even if it’s only pretend); further explore countries, cultures and cities unknown to me; take part in a MUN; showcase my ability to work quickly under pressure and get the pertinent information out
  • What Diversity means to me: We interact and take pride in our similarities and differences, whether they be along lines of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, ability, religion, or anything else and realize that with even a small amount of understanding, things that seem like giant hurdles can be easily removed.

Shelly Kopatz – New York Times – ECOSOC

  • A few words about me: I am a student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem studying communications and international relations.
  • Journalistic Objective for JLMUN 2019:
  • My objective for JLMUN 2019 is to be able to write actual articles and in some way feel what it’s like to be a real journalist, especially in a big newspaper company like The NY TIMES. As of now, my journalistic experience includes my army service as the spokesperson of the Golani Brigade, and two more years that I worked as a media consultant with leading companies in the alcohol and food market. I still don’t know what I want to do after I finish studying, but I know that it will have some kind of connection between media, journalism and covering international stories. I personally feel like Israel is always the target of everything in most of the international media channels, and I hope that I could change that in the future. I think that most of the time only one side of the story is shown when talked about Israel, and that a lot of international media channels lack the basic requirement of being objective.  As for myself, I know that during JLMUN 2019 I will be able to cover stories and important subjects objectively, as I would want to see in real life.
  • What Diversity means to me: To me, diversity means accepting the other. I truly believe that all men (and women) are created equal, and that no matter where around the world, we should all have the same basic rights. There is no reason to treat others differently just because their sex, size, race or skin color. We are all the same.

Melanie Raidl – Der Spiegel – European Council

  • A few words about me: As far as journalistic experience goes, I have worked for daily papers in Europe like Süddeutsche Zeitung and Kurier. For a fun fact – when I am not sitting in my chair writing, I like to run in the mountains.
  • My Journalistic Objective for JLMUN 2019: Provide the outside world with exciting insights on topics discussed.
  • What Diversity means to me: Studying with people from 38 different countries, everyone respecting each other and having fun

Ariella Rose – The Jerusalem Post – Joint Cabinet Crisis

  • A few words about me: I was born in America and moved to Israel when I was 5. I live in Modi’in, and I am a high school student in 10th grade, in a school called Pelech near Rehovot. I’ve been doing MUN for about a year now, and this is my 10th conference. Besides MUN, I enjoy math, hiking, and reading. my dream is to join the IDF and be a general there, but I still have some time.
  • My Journalistic Objective for JLMUN 2019: I do not have much journalistic experience, so my objective is to learn as much as possible about journalism.
  • What Diversity means to me: Having a lot of people from a lot of different cultures work together and focusing on what brings them together, and not what separates them.

Donata Nebel – Al Jazeera – NATO

  • A few words about me: I study Liberal Arts and Science with a major in Governance in Freiburg, Germany. My current third year of my studies I spend at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. I have hitchhiked through large parts of the Middle East and Europe and love to listen to peoples stories. Furthermore, I believe in the fundamental value of a free press and the influence it has on world politics. That is what brought me to the Press corps at JLMUN. Be prepared for many questions!
  • My Journalistic Objective for JLMUN 2019: To deepen the current debates by providing analysis and interviews. To focus on the representation of countries from the Middle East, in order to provide an alternative to the biasses of western media.
  • What diversity means to me: ….to be able to accept that a group of people thinks, behaves differently to what I am used to.
